On most subjects, I have let the people of nineteenth-century Edgefield speak for themselves. I have tried to construct as much as possible a total, almost encyclopedic, history of nineteenth-century Edgefield families and their communities. There family and community mesh together in the kind of setting where most nineteenth-century Southerners played out their roles. Because many questions of southern history have reached a stage of debate where we now need to investigate the issues in the most concrete surroundings possible, I am engaged in an ongoing study of life in one rural county, Edgefield, South Carolina. Preface The Bible taught black and white Southerners long ago what historians are now asserting: that the family is a crucial determinant of human behavior. 195 Lucy Petway Holcombe Pickens / 196 Maria Pickens and Matthew Calbraith Butler / 197 Edgefield Court House / 197 Trinity Episcopal Church / 198 Macedonia Baptist Church / 199 Roselands / 200 Roseland Tenant and Slave Cabin / 200 Graniteville Mill Village House / 201 Slave Cabin / 202 Tenant Houses / 202 List of Illustrations Arthur Simkins / 191 Stoneware Jar by Dave the Potter / 192 Charlotte Simkins / 193 Paris Simkins / 194 Mary Ann Simkins and Daughter Mattie R.
